Barry Flanagan, Retail World’s former editor, passed away on New Year’s Day, 2009.

The sudden loss of the guru of editorial coverage of Australia’s giant retail industry shocked a big network of relatives, business contacts and friends throughout the nation and overseas. Former publisher and editor-in-chief of privately-owned and Sydney-headquartered Retail Media, Barry will be best remembered as the tireless editor of the company’s irrepressible flagship, the fortnightly Retail World.

He was a crack magazine business editor and much of his heart remained in breaking stories in traditional ‘Hold the presses!’ newspaper style. For more than 20 years, the tall, sprightly and occasionally brusque Barry oversaw his own intelligence web, which involved a who’s who of decision-makers in retail, from the giants of Coles, Woolworths and DJs, to a multitude of other players, including upstarts such as the independents (usually associated with IGA) and the likes of Jewel, ALDI and Franklins.

Barry nurtured an unparalleled range of retail ‘big hitters’ for information and stories, plus often appeared on TV and radio to tell the ‘real story’ behind big moves behind price-fixing, generics, ALDI, Metcash and Australia’s two supermarket mega players.

He leaves a legacy in the retail industry at large, and his memory embedded in Retail Media’s history.
